Collective bargaining in the banana sector can contribute, among other things, to the availability of employment opportunities, improved safety and health at work, increased productivity and adaptability in the workplace, higher wages and a more equitable distribution of wealth. Strong workers` and employers` organizations can therefore play a key role in rural development by facilitating access to services, providing a voice to those directly affected by rural policies and programmes, and through plantation-negotiated CFCs. However, the banana industry has traditionally been characterized by low union membership. This is because the workforce is increasingly „recreational“ thanks to fixed-term contracts, deregulation and flexibilization of labour law, as well as anti-union approaches by employers. „employer“: any person in agriculture who employs or cares for another person and who explicitly or implicitly commits to paying him, and understands – These procedures should be written in the KBA from the outset and, if necessary, revised.
