Brian Cowen TD, Minister of Health and Children, today announced that the Agreement on the Medical Treatment of Temporary Visitors between Ireland and Australia, signed in September 1997 between the governments of the two countries, has entered into force. Similarly, Irish visitors to Australia receive emergency services and assistance with the cost of prescribed medicines and medicines on the same basis as people with their habitual residence in Australia. Australia has already concluded such agreements with a number of countries. Under the agreement, Australian visitors receive emergency treatment in Ireland in public hospitals, subject to the low nominal fee applicable to habitual residents in Ireland who do not hold a medical card.
